With the above components and properties, hospital wastewater in particular and medical wastewater in general have not too high pollution levels and can be optimally treated with biological treatment technologies.
Medical wastewater treatment technology using AAO
However, with the high level of infection and germs in hospital wastewater, thorough disinfection and treatment of pathogens is extremely necessary.
Today, most hospitals in the world and in Vietnam have applied AAO technology process to effectively treat medical wastewater . AAO is a biological technology that effectively treats wastewater containing high nutrient content such as domestic wastewater, medical wastewater (hospital), wastewater from food processing industries, confectionery, seafood... The stages in the AAO process include: Anaerobic (anaerobic biological tank) - Anoxic (anoxic biological tank) - Oxic (aerobic biological tank), then disinfection will be performed by microfiltration such as MBR or disinfectant chemicals such as Chlorine.
2. Treatment principle according to AAO technology
- Anaerobic: to remove hydrocarbons, precipitate heavy metals, precipitate phosphorus, remove active chlorine... In anaerobic tanks, the treatment process is mainly the activity of anaerobic microorganisms. During the process of growth and development, anaerobic microorganisms will absorb dissolved organic substances in wastewater, decompose and convert them into gaseous compounds. The gas mixture produced is often called biogas or biogas.
– Anoxic: to reduce NO3 to N2 and continue to reduce BOD and COD. Wastewater contains nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which need to be removed from the wastewater. In the Anoxic tank, under anoxic conditions, anoxic microorganisms develop and process N and P through the process of Nitrification and Phosphoril. The formed molecular nitrogen gas N2 will escape the water and go outside. Organic compounds containing phosphorus will be converted by the bacterial system into new compounds that do not contain phosphorus and compounds that contain phosphorus but are easily decomposed by aerobic bacteria.
– Aerobic (Oxic or Aerobic): to convert NH4 into NO3, reduce BOD, COD, sulfide... This is a tank that uses aerobic microorganisms to decompose waste. In this tank, microorganisms existing in suspended form (activated sludge) will absorb oxygen and organic matter (pollutants) and use nutrients Nitrogen & Phosphorus to synthesize new cells, solving releases CO2, H2O and energy.
