Urban wastewater contains a large amount of organic and inorganic compounds such as:

Contains a large amount of suspended matter: A component found in urban wastewater, in granular form, consisting of about 25% minerals and 75% organic matter.
Insoluble solids: Includes substances such as organic nitrogen, ammonia, organic phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus.
Harmful microorganisms, bacteria, and germs.

The discharge of untreated urban wastewater into the aquatic environment first causes the water to reduce its clarity. Biodegradable substances when discharged into water promote biological activity in water sources, leading to a decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration, causing lack of oxygen in the water, affecting organisms in the water.

The urban wastewater treatment process is carried out as follows:
- Step 1: Preliminary treatment

First, wastewater passes through the trash screen, garbage, plastic bags, leftover food, and solid waste are retained to reduce damage to the system during the water filtration process.

- Step 2: Primary treatment

Remove small-sized garbage, dirt, and fine dust in wastewater. Wastewater is kept in a tank, where heavy solids can settle to the bottom, fats and light garbage float to the top. The wastes at the bottom and the wastes that float to the top are treated, and the water in between is transferred to the secondary stage for treatment.

- Step 3: Secondary treatment

This is the most important stage in biological treatment methods. The remaining organic substances, suspended solids, bacteria, and germs are removed before releasing the water into the environment. At this stage, anaerobic microorganisms are used to convert organic nitrogen into ammonia nitrogen. Next, biological nitrification takes place, splitting ammonia nitrogen into nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen, a reaction that occurs thanks to autotrophic microorganisms.

In addition, urban wastewater also contains a large amount of sludge. Some safe sludge treatment methods include liming, using aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms to stabilize sludge and avoid odors. Anaerobic digestion reduces sludge and produces biogas, removing excess water.
