Edi water filtration technology for medical and pharmaceutical industry

Introduction of medical water filtration system using EDI technology

The full name of EDI technology is RO – EDI (Reverse Osmosis – Electrodeionization is a combination of reverse osmosis and, demineralization process).

EDI water treatment system includes basic ingredients such as pre-treatment, RO, EDI, and disinfection. Through EDI technology, the outlet water meeting the ultra-pure water standards can be used in medical and pharmaceutical departments.  

To ensure the microbiological criteria of EDI, the water tanks must be made of sus 304, sus 316, and be closed tightly during the operation process. Warning device will be accompanied to control the operation process of the water supply pump and RO pump.  

Water treatment process using EDI technology for the medical and pharmaceutical industry

EDI water supply system for the medical, pharmaceutical industry includes in the following basic stages: Water source ► Multilayer filtration ► Activated carbon filtration ► Ion exchange (cation and anion) ► sophisticated filtration ► reverse osmosis ► sterilization.

Step 1: Multilayer filter

The water supply for EDI is usually taken from tap-water or underground water systems meeting quality standards. 

A multilayer filter contains quartz sand and manganese sand. Quartz sand removes suspended and large particles in water. Manganese sand helps absorb metal ions onto the material surface, thoroughly treating metal ion components in water 

Step 2: Activated carbon filter   

An activated carbon filter column is effective in removing organic compounds, deodorizing, and removing excess chlorine in the water.

Step 3: Ion exchange filter

Ion exchange filter is effective in removing cations and anions in water, which reduces the hardness of the water. 

Step 4:  Pure filter (Cartridge) 

The size of the filter core slots being below 5µm helps to remove suspended solids in water before going through RO reverse treatment system. 

Step 5: Reverse osmosis filter 

The productivity of the RO membrane is up to 96.95%, and completely remove strange ions, bacteria, fungi, algae… The outlet water meets pure water standard, conductivity below 0.1 uS/cm. Then, the water passed through the EDI device has conductivity decreasing to <4.3µS / cm. 

Step 6: Sterilizing device 

Sterilization can use ultraviolet rays or ozone to kill bacteria. Then, the water goes through the filter core to remove corpses of microorganisms before being used. 

Note: The pump used in EDI water filtration technology must be made of stainless steel or polymer. Besides, the pipelines are usually made by specialized plastic or stainless steel
