Water filtration process for dialysis system

The water filtration process of the hemodialysis water filtration system is very strict, including basic stages:

Preprocessing stage

Primary filtration equipment, coarse filter to remove sediment, then pressure filter, softener to remove calcium and magnesium ions in water and carbon filter absorption to remove organic substances and chloramines. Then, continue through the filter layer to remove bacteria, viruses...

Water through this treatment stage is guaranteed to meet physical, chemical, microbiological and pH criteria.

Purification stage using RO reverse osmosis membrane

RO reverse osmosis membrane removes organic substances, dissolved solids, microorganisms and dangerous toxins such as lead, mercury, arsenic, ammonium...

More developed countries require higher water purity. In Vietnam, the standard for using water used in dialysis has been the American standard since 2007.

The output water source at this stage ensures that the water after treatment is 99.99% H2O.

Note:

The pure water filtration system of the above process still does not produce water quality that meets the standards used for dialysis systems. It must be mixed with dialysis solution and filtered through a water filter membrane in the dialysis machine to help prevent bacteria and viruses from re-entering.
To prevent possible complications related to RO water in dialysis, it is necessary to disinfect the water line and clean the pipes. At the same time, you must test to see if the disinfectant is still there before using it.

The input water source of the system is tap water which must meet QCVN02: 2009/BYT standards. Then the water is led through filter columns:

- Multi-frequency filter column containing quartz sand and manganese sand: Quartz sand removes large suspended sediments while manganese sand partially treats metal ions in water.

- Activated carbon filter column: Charcoal has a high density and large contact surface, helping to absorb organic compounds in water, at the same time, treating residual chlorine and deodorizing.

- Ion exchange filter column: Has the effect of softening water, cations will exchange with Mg2+, Ca2+ ions and other metals to reduce water hardness, the output water of this filter column meets soft water standards.

- Cartridge filter: Cartridge filter core with slot size less than 5µm helps remove suspended solids arising in the system, to protect the safety of the RO filter membrane.

- Level 1 RO membrane: The output water source of the first level RO filter is pure water, with an electrical conductivity of 16µM/cm.

- Level 2 RO filter: The output water source of the second level RO filter has an electrical conductivity of 5µS/cm, meeting water quality requirements for kidney filtration systems, with no microorganisms in the water.

After passing through the RO membrane, the water is passed through the kidney filter using a pipeline system.

Note:

To be more certain about the output water source, you can carry out an additional disinfection stage with a UV light or an Ozone generator to help kill bacteria arising in the pipes and filter out bacteria before being put into use.
The output water quality has completely removed impurities, metal ions, gas ions and microorganisms in the water, meeting AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) testing standards of the United States.
